J.A. Quello and the dream of Olaus J. Rendum that created what is now our modern-day Bethesda. Bethesda was introduced to the community in 1914 when a telegram from J.A. Quello and S.O. Steensland (a prominent businessman on the Synod Board of Trustees who would help sponsor the project) was received stating “Old People’s Home assured for Beresford”. Olaus J. Rendum had made the first substantial donation that started the project 1 mile outside of town, he himself used the facility until his passing.

Since its founding Bethesda has seen many renditions. The original 3 story building held up to 32 residents. Its first administrator was Mr. J.J. Nygaard, also the administrator for the Children’s home. In 1932 an addition was added to increase the number of residents to 53. The largest of the additions was completed in 1949 where 27 new rooms with private bathrooms and 3 new sun parlors were housed. By 1964 Bethesda of Beresford was a fully licensed nursing home.

The Bethesda we know was born as an idea in 1983, the original building, now nearing 70 years old, was facing higher maintenance costs along with foreseeable remodel due to new regulations. The conversation to build an entirely new home was underway and was made possible due to support from the community. Ernest Thompson, a local farmer, donated a section of land in Beresford’s city limits with the requirement that it be used as the site for the new Bethesda. A Fund Drive found success due to the countless families who donated making it possible to keep living rates as low as possible. It wasn’t until May 5th, 1985, when they broke ground for the new building. Not long after, the new Bethesda of Beresford was opened to both residents and the public on May 21st, 1986. This new facility could be home to 83 residents (59 single rooms and 12 double rooms), a Chapel with stained glass windows, a dedicated activities room, and updated maintenance facilities. In more recent years the addition of therapy services and an independent living inn has allowed Bethesda to meet the growing needs of both the community and its residents.

The first Corporation of Churches and Board of Directors was made up of 15 local churches with 7 appointed board members.

                The Original Corporation Churches:

                                Emmanuel, Beresford Trondhjem, Volin

St. Peter, Burbank St. Paul, Elk Point

                                Romsdal, Hudson Vangen, Mission Hill

                                Trinity, Hudson Skrefsud, Beresford

                                Lands, Hudson Roseni, Beresford

Immanuel, Hudson Brule Creek, Elk Point

                                Nazareth, Beresford Volin, Volin

                                Grand Valley, Canton

                First Corporation Board of Directors:

                                Rev.
